Home Personlization With Items that Warm the Heart
Considering that home is where the heart is, it’s only right that it be comprised of items that we love that are not only store bought but have true sentimental meaning. Photos, mementos and other chachkies that tell the stories of our lives and experiences are what truly makes a house a home.
A few weeks ago, my son was up all night with a severe ear infection and a sore throat. It was so bad, that he spent most of the night screaming and writhing in pain, which of course makes you feel completely helpless as a parent. In my quest to find whatever I could to soothe him, I was continuously walking back and forth between his bedroom and mine. After procuring an ice pack, heating pad, children’s Tylenol, making tea and a honey lemon concoction to alleviate his throat pain, I wished my husband was home to help me out but he was away on business. Mama and Chief were left to fend for ourselves.
In the midst of all that walking back and forth between bedrooms and even though I was truly longing for the extra support my husband provides during all things crisis, I was comforted by the warm glow that the lamp on my console table was casting on the shadow box filled with my wedding memorabilia.
My husband had this made for me while I was in the hospital after delivering our son. A very beautiful but uncharacteristic gift from him. He likes to know that his gifts will go over well, which is why I’m not very often surprised. He either wants a list of the exact make, model, brand, size and color of things that I want or I’m taken directly to the store to pick the exact item. So when I came home from the hospital to this gift, I was taken aback in the best way possible. The best gifts are those that are thoughtful and have meaning and I have to say, that this is probably the best gift that I’ve ever received from my husband. He included our ring pillow, wedding broom, save the date magnet, the CD that accompanied our thank you cards, the good wishes cards from our guests and our first anniversary card from my best friend. He also asked that the background be coral, which was one of our wedding colors.
I do intend on adding some more of our family photos to this wall so it’s definitely still a work in progress but I have dubbed it our looooove corner, hence the je t’aime plaque, which means “I love you” in French.
There are plenty of beautiful articles in my home. Some I’ve spent hours choosing and narrowing down to ensure they’d be a perfect fit but the most special thing in my home will likely never be seen. While building, we had our bible placed in the foundation.
Our continued blessings and favor have not been lost on us. In fact, I’m almost positive that because of God’s grace, we not only have this house but we also have love, success and prosperity. Which is why we felt that it was not only important but necessary to place the Bible in the foundation.
There will be a million things that you can buy to personalize your space. However, what items truly make your house a home?
