Game Room Essentials: Our Custom Nintendo Switch TV Cabinet – Mama 'N Chief

Game Room Essentials: Our Custom Nintendo Switch TV Cabinet

I’ll admit it. I like cool stuff. Gadgets and things that make people ooh and ahhh because they’ve never seen it before, make me happy. I’m not the first to have a Nintendo Switch TV cabinet. In fact, I got the idea and the build plan from Pinterest. However, it doesn’t make it less innovative and interesting right?

When I came across this find on Pinterest, I had no interest in making it myself. We were in the middle of our basement remodel and I took the idea to my cabinet builder Wayne of True Custom by Wayne. He was quite skeptical, to say the least. He stared at the picture for a while and initially blew me off but I can’t be shaken that easily. You see I know the type of work that Wayne and his guys do. They did custom cabinets in my Mom’s basement apartment at our home, in our basement bar, and in our wine room. Everything was impeccable, with fine craftsmanship. So even though I knew this was outside of his wheelhouse, I knew that he could do it.

After showing him the picture a few more times, he finally caved and said he would figure it out. Hooray right? Not at first. Although I had found pictures of the actual cabinet, it took me some time to find the building plans and dimensions for it. Once I did, I forwarded it to Wayne and he asked if he could take the television that we purchased for it, to build around it.

We wouldn’t see that TV again for almost five months after the remodel was completed. During that time, Wayne fell ill, then recovered. Then he was in a car accident, telling me later that he hit a cow that was in the road. Y’all, I digress and I know I need to say on-topic but a FREAKING COW??! Thank God he and his children were able to walk away.

Anyway, during the time they were working on the cabinet colors, I had to find paint colors for the 2 joy-cons. Based on the original article I found, I took the turquoise-colored joy-con to Sherwin Williams and they color matched it for me. I also used that color for accent walls around the game room the cabinet would be in.

I took the advice of the original poster and purchased Liquitex Acrylic Fluorescent Red paint. Wayne’s guys picked up the paint and while I knew they were working on the cabinet I really didn’t have much of a progress report for some time, nor had I seen any photos of how it was coming along.

Two weeks ago, Wayne called and said they would be coming at the end of the week to bring and mount the television and cabinet. I have to say, it was well worth the wait. The work was once again top-notch. The cabinet was well built and the side cabinets where we will house consoles and games have soft-close doors. It really helps that it looks nice but it’s also functional.

The TV is housed inside and a custom frame was made to minimize the gaps on all four sides, making it look more realistic. I’m going to add the A, B, X, Y lettering to the right joy-con and it will then be complete.

I couldn’t be more pleased with it and it is a great focal point in the room. Even if Nintendo Switch becomes outdated, for me this cabinet will still be on-trend. The cabinet itself and the paint ran us just under $800 but if you’re talented enough to do it yourself, I can’t imagine it would be more than $200.

My husband and I are not that gifted, so as my Mom would say, we paid the man the “$2” and we couldn’t be happier. Clearly, the kid is too.
