Are Area Rugs on Carpet, Fab or Faux Pas? – Mama 'N Chief

Are Area Rugs on Carpet, Fab or Faux Pas?

When we built our home, we opted for mostly hardwood floors, which I have to say, require a great deal of maintenance. The floors are dark and if we don’t stick to a daily sweeping regimen, it’s very easy for dust to be seen and accumulate.

We only have carpet in the five bedrooms as well as our upstairs family room. We figured that those would be the most suitable areas for carpeting. However, three years in and Jermaine and I have started to change our tune. We’ve discussed, ripping up the carpet in the master bedroom and the upstairs family room, primarily because my taste has changed. I want to give those rooms a more intimate and elegant feel.

Having  carpet can limit, your ability to bring a room together with the pops of color and panache that area rugs bring. I did my research on putting rugs on carpet and the reviews were definitely mixed, especially amongst professional interior designers.

The problems that arise from putting an area rug on carpet are, the surface is not flat, which can cause your rug to buckle in places, the corners of the rug can turn up easily, making it a tripping hazard and the carpet beneath the rug could be damaged.

With that being said, I was willing to risk it all in the upstairs family room and add a beautiful rug that I found at Macy’s, which ultimately gave the space the aesthetic that I was looking for. The deep blue of the rug really tied in all of the other blues in the room.

The next step will be incorporating curtains but I’d rather not talk about curtains. Please don’t judge my naked windows. Curtains are the most evil and expensive project, in my book. Evil because I can’t decide on what I want and we all know the meaning of expensive and having over 30 windows in my home, doesn’t help either.

As for my new rug, I did take some precautions, in the event that we don’t get around to taking the carpet up. I did use a rug pad as well as anti curling carpet gripper, that I found on Amazon, to keep the corners down.

Im going to say, if done correctly, rugs on carpet can absolutely be fab, as long as you ensure the corners won’t curl, the rug lays flat and don’t bunch up and you  follow the basic rule for rug buying, which is, the rug should have adequate size for the space.

I hope you found this helpful in your decision on adding an area rug to a carpeted area. No matter where an area rug is placed, it really does a great job at making a room feel cohesive.
