I Organized my Linen Closet With These Three Items – Mama 'N Chief

I Organized my Linen Closet With These Three Items

To be quite honest there is enough storage space in my home to accommodate the 4 people who live here but that still doesn’t make us exempt from clutter and excess. My husband is usually the first one to point out when we need to start purging. It will either come in the form of an announcement or me finding stuff in the trash. Either way, when he “suggested” that I should consider reorganizing our hall linen closet, I knew I better hop to it before he started his free disposal service.

Technically, the closet wasn’t too bad. A little disheveled and a tad cramped but not the worst I’ve ever seen, cleaned, or organized.

I started by cleaning everything out and immediately noticed that my husband would be in all his glory because I realized we didn’t need or use half of the stuff inside. I began by making 3 piles of what would stay in that closet, what would be thrown or given away, and what could be moved to a more appropriate location in the house. We had dish towels in an upstairs linen closet. Why? I moved those and linens for the guest room to the closet downstairs. I also moved linens and towels for my son’s room, to his linen closet, which was practically empty.

Now that I had an empty closet, it was time to start adding the necessities back in. After moving many of the items to different useful locations throughout the house, I realized that this linen closet which is really just for my husband and I didn’t require much and definitely should’ve been more organized than it was.

The three items that tied it all together was an oversized storage basket and matching rectangular wicker basket from TJ Maxx and these darling little towel organizers from Amazon.

The towel tower would really work well to save space in linen closets with less space than mine but I like how sleek it makes the closet feel. I also enjoyed rolling my towels. You get 2 per box and you can interlock them to make one continuous unit.

My goal was to see everything you need as soon as you open the door. I originally had so many towels and extra sheets in there that we technically don’t use. We change our sheets every Sunday, which is wash day and get new towels twice a week. I left just enough on top to accommodate that. The rest went in the storage bin. We also kept extra toilet paper downstairs and would just restock bathrooms as needed. It’s so much more convenient to have paper supplies upstairs and easily accessible.

Many of our closets house the cable boxes and wires for our TV’s that are hung, so I used a round vase to conceal that and add some flair. We have other large comforters but they are stored in my bedroom closet crawl space. If you need to store comforters in your linen closet, rolling them and tying them with ribbon or string, saves a great deal of space. I did that here with my heated blanket and quilt. Oh and please, don’t judge my towel swan! I know it looks more like a snake but I’m a work in progress who’s also trying to fancy.

Overall I think it came out well and just gave me the opportunity to eliminate a lot of items that we didn’t need or could have been stored better.

Lastly, I would like to add that this closet houses our upstairs fire extinguisher. You should have at least one on every level of your home. It’s a small investment for what could be a huge lifesaver. You can purchase one here.

Happy organizing!
