Hanging Curtains With Command Hooks – Mama 'N Chief

Hanging Curtains With Command Hooks

Funny story alert. When we first built our home, I walked into Ethan Allen furniture store, looking for a couch. I had never been in an Ethan Allen and quickly realized this was a very upscale establishment. After speaking with a sales woman for a few minutes, I was bamboozled into an in home window treatment consultation. The nice lady came a week later and measured windows in only 3 rooms. We chose samples and decided on a combination of roman shades for some rooms with an accompaniment of drapes in others. A few days passed and she sent me a quote for the 3 rooms. It was $11,000. Needless to say, Ethan Allen did not provide window treatments in my home and the windows continue to be naked, to this day.

Item #1,056 of things that I wish I knew before building a home:  window treatments are bloody expensive! I’m not British but “bloody” was the best word I can think of, to replace what I really want to say. With over 30 windows in my home, window treatments have been on the back burner of my to-do list but as I get closer to completely furnishing rooms, curtains, drapes or plantation shutters are inevitable.

When we built our home, my husband was opposed to traditional blinds because he felt that it would take away from the appeal of the windows and the scenery. Our section of the neighborhood was up and coming, so we had no neighbors at the time and I was okay with fish bowling it. However, so much has happened in 3 years and we now have neighbors on all sides. I came up with some impromptu fixes, using tension rods and cafe curtains, in the bathrooms that have windows and a guest bedroom but I’m ready to start adding curtains to some other rooms, to block out the sun and just to give the overall aesthetic that curtains bring to a room.

While I still would like a professional company to hang our window treatments, we are in the midst of two major renovations in our home, so once again, they’ll have to wait. Because I just wanted something for the time being and because my husband literally hates nails in the wall, I decided to try hanging bathroom curtains with command hooks. It was actually pretty simple and is a perfect solution, especially for renters!

Supplies

Curtain Rod (less than 1 in diameter, will work best)

Curtain Panels (I would opt for lighter sheers)

Measuring Tape

Sticky Back Velcro Squares, can be purchased here.

Command Large Timeless Hook, can be purchased here.

Rubbing Alcohol and cloth

Step Stool/Ladder

Step 1: Measure and mark where you want the command strips to go. I went all the way to the ceiling to make the window appear larger.

Step 2: Clean the area above the window frame with rubbing alcohol, specifically where you plan on placing the hooks.

Step 3: Place a piece of velcro around each hook and the corresponding piece on each end of the rod about an inch away from the finial. This just further secures the rod in place.

Step 4: Place the red side of the adhesive on the back of the command hook and the black side on the wall, make sure the removal tab faces downward. Press it to the wall for 30 seconds and then allow to set for an hour. Repeat on the other side.

Step 5. Place the curtain rod on the hook. Be sure to align the velcro pieces.

*** Here is where things got dicey for me. I had to unexpectedly add a third hook because the middle of that rod was bowing badly. Fortunately, it doesn’t look bad, as I was concerned about it showing. Word to the wise, larger windows will require at least 3 hooks. I may end up removing the cafe curtains but I thought the combination was kind of cute***

Let me know how this works out for you, if you try it. Thanks for reading!

I’m definitely going to try this! I have hung my curtains “ghetto style” short of using nails. I hate those old style traditional curtain rods. Great idea Eb and thanks for sharing. I’m going to have my boys to help me with this project, it’ll give them something to do and I don’t like ladders…even step stools. ~ I hope mine turn out as beautiful as yours!
