How to Take Dollar Store Vases From Cheap to Chic – Mama 'N Chief

How to Take Dollar Store Vases From Cheap to Chic

I’ve been on a spray painting bonanza because my unfinished basement, which I’ve dubbed my DIY workspace, goes under construction starting tomorrow. The good news is, my Mom, who recently moved in with us, will have her own small apartment and we will have a gaming area, bar and wine room, the bad news is, where will I spray paint all of my dollar store crap, with the reckless abandon that unfinished floors and walls affords you?

I have slowly been changing my home decor from farmhouse to shabby chic, with a touch of modern. I know, I’m all over the place!  I like old and vintage  but my heart craves sparkly and shiny too. Lucky for me, it’s my house and I can do what I want but my poor husband tends to not like the tab that major changes bring, so I do what I can on a budget and when I can’t budget, I give him big smiles and lots of  (ahem) “love,” until we’re all on the same page.

This weekend, I was looking at the bar cart in my bathroom and realized that this piece that I wanted and swooned over for months, had no pizazz, so I decided to use some Family Dollar glass pieces that I purchased recently, to enhance the look.

Considering that I am all about easy DIY’s, I’d have to rate this one a 9 on the easy-o-meter, with super easy being a 10. While I made these for my bathroom, they could easily pass as table centerpieces for a wedding or party.

Supplies

Vase and candle holder from Family Dollar, jewel that I got on clearance from Michaels, E600 Plus, clear drying glue, Rust-Oleum, Mirror Effect Spray Paint. Total cost under $15.

Step 1.

Glue the vase to the candle holder and let dry.

Step 2.

Spray Paint, using a sweeping motion, so you won’t have drip spots. You may have to do at least 2 coats, allowing the paint to dry and then going back over any undone spots. Mirrored spray paint is tricky because you don’t get the mirrored effect until it starts to dry, so don’t overdue it with spraying until you allow it to set a little.

Step 3.

Glue the jewel on.

***Tip for E600 Glue***

Allow the glue to get tacky before placing your jewel on, otherwise it can slide around. I ended up having to use a ruler to hold the jewel in place on the first vase but things went much smoother when I let the glue get tacky for the second.

Step 4.

Add flowers, have fun styling and display!

P.S. 7 of the items from my cart are from Family Dollar, if I didn’t tell you that, would you have guessed it? For me, the cost of an item doesn’t determine the value it will bring to your home or life. Happy DIY’ing!
